Welcome

STEP 1
Read the New Mexico Administrative Code book to determine the licensing classification(s) you need for the type of work you would like to perform in New Mexico. The New Mexico Administrative Code book can be obtained by contacting CID at 505-827-7030 or can be accessed at the CID web site: www.rld.state.nm.us/cid.

STEP 2
YOU MUST BE PRE-APPROVED TO TAKE ANY EXAMINATION, BASED ON YOUR EXPERIENCE.

You MUST have the required number of years of practical or related experience for the specific classification(s) you are applying for. Your experience MUST be within the last ten (10) years.

The following license classifications require two (2) years of FULL-TIME experience within the last ten (10) years:

Residential Building (GB-2) and Building Specialties (GS-1 through GS-30)

Asphalt Bitumen and Concrete Construction (GA-1 through GA-5)
Fixed Works (GF1 - GF9)
Residential Wiring (ER-1) and Electrical Specialties (ES-1 through ES-7)
Mechanical Specialties (MS-3, 6)

The following classifications require four (4) years of FULL-TIME experience within the last ten (10) years.

GF98, EE-98, MM-98, GA-98, EL-1, MM-1, MM-2, MM-3, MM-4, MS-12, MS-14, GB98

If you do NOT have the required years of experience, you will NOT be approved to test.

STEP 3
Your application will be APPROVED or REJECTED based on the information submitted. Please follow instructions carefully. Most rejections occur because of incomplete applications and/or inadequate work experience descriptions.

If APPROVED, Experior, CID's testing vendor will provide you with an eligibility packet containing exam registration, scheduling and exam content information. You must register your exams with Experior.

If REJECTED, you will receive notification by mail as to why your application was rejected. You will then have six (6) months to correct the problem and resubmit.

In addition to the trade-specific examination(s) you must either pass the Business and Law offered by Experior Assessments or take an "approved" Business and Law Course. The schools listed below offer an approved course. The State of New Mexico or CID does NOT sponsor these schools.

STEP 4
To obtain your Qualifying Party Certificate, send a copy of your score letter(s) indicating passing scores for the Business and Law examination and the technical examination(s) for the classifications being applied for. Candidates using an approved business and law course in lieu of the Business and Law examination must submit the original certificate issued by the approved entity showing completion of the course. NOTE: Score letters and certificates are valid for one year after the date issued.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are becoming a Qualifying Party for a company, which is currently licensed in New Mexico, or if you are currently an active Qualifying Party adding a new classification, use the "Status Change Form Application" to add your classification and/or Qualifying Party certification to the existing license. DO NOT USE A Contractor License Application.

STEP 5
Complete the Contractors License Application, and submit with all other applicable documentation and license application fees to the Licensing Vendor for the State of NM. Please follow all instructions carefully to avoid any delays in processing. Incomplete applications will be returned to you.

You must submit, in addition to your application:

A copy of your business entity's registration with the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department. The number of the Taxation and revenue Department is 505-827-0700.

Your registration with the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (NMPRC) if you are applying as a corporation or a limited liability company. The phone number for the NMPRC is 505-827-4500.

Either a license bond, OR completed cash collateral assignment form, OR, a current financial statement (See instructions on License Application).

The correct licensing fee, certificate fee and application fee.

If you have bid or performed any work in the past twelve months that requires a license from The New Mexico Construction Industries Division (CID) without having been duly licensed, you must disclose that information on the application. CID personnel will contact you as to the additional requirements for licensing.

STEP 6
Mail your application to the address on the form. If you want to be sure your application is complete and acceptable, you may deliver it in person to the address provided on the application and request that your application be reviewed for completeness while you wait.
